Welcome to the first installment of the GayWaves column in the Chronicle. GayWaves, heard on WRUW 91.1 FM every Wednesday between 7:00 and 7:30 p.m., has broadcast news, commentary, interviews, community events, and music to the lesbian, gay and bisexual community of "Gayer" Cleveland for over ten years. In case you didn't know it, the Cleveland area is blessed in having two gay radio programs. Make it a gay radio evening and tune into the nationally syndicated show This Way Out on WCSB 89.3 FM every Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., then turn to WRUW for GayWaves' staffer Josette's Allergic to the Mainstream show of women's music followed by GayWaves at 7:00 p.m.

Although many of us would like to think otherwise, television, and to a lesser extent film and print, is a powerful influence on how people and issues are perceived by the public. Right now, positive portrayals of our community and its issues in the media are under constant attack by homophobic groups around the country, who realize the power of the media. These groups have put together well-organized letter writing and telephone campaigns to pressure producers and sponsors to eliminate any gay positive program content. It is vital in this time when, as we gain more of our rights, we come under more intense homophobic attacks that we show our strength by countering the attacks with our own direct response to those who control the media.

This month we ask you to show your support for the local broadcast of a pioneering national lesbian, gay and bisexual television show.

If you read the June 16th, k.d. lang edition of the Advocate, or watched NBC'S Entertainment Tonight June 22nd, then you will have learned of the new miniseries In the Life being offered for sale to PBS outlets across the country. In the Life is the first all lesbian, gay and bisexual series to be offered for national television. Hosted by lesbian comic Kate Clinton, no relation to the presidential candidate, In the Life will present a variety of news, features and entertainment for and about our community.

The show is not on Channel 25's current schedule. The station's Program Manager, Bob Olive, stated the show was one of a number of independent programs being offered for sale to PBS stations. He said that he had to review the show for technical and content quality before it could be purchased. Mr. Olive went on to state that he must also consider the size of the audience the show would attract. I told Mr. Olive that he must take into account the pioneering nature of the show and its importance to our community which has so little available in the nature of positive gay programming. We at GayWaves strongly urge you, and your families and friends, to call or write Channel 25 and ask for the show to be aired. Contact them at 398-2800 or write to: Mr. Robert Olive, Program Director, WVIZ, 4300 Brookpark Rd., Cleveland, OH 44134

Call or write as soon as possible and show your support for progressive gay television programming in Cleveland. Let them know if you have supported the station's fund raising efforts in the past and that their decision could affect your support in the future.

We at GayWaves would like to get your opinion about how we are portrayed as well as news of upcoming media events. Our program is taped on Monday nights prior to the Wednesday broadcast. Call us at WRUW at 368-2208 on Monday nights between 9 and 11 PM to reach us directly or call the station anytime and leave a message. Remember, information for a Wednesday show is needed at least by the Monday before the show airs.
